Krav Maga
Krav Maga is the newest fitness program being offered up to gym goers nationwide. It's not for the shy because this class packs some military muscle. It looks like kick-boxing and it sounds like aerobics, but Krav Maga has a whole new kick to it.
Krav Maga instructor Ernie Kirk explains, "Krav Maga means contact combat. It was developed for the Israeli military. It's based on instinctive moves. It's going from passive to an aggressive state and it's a blend of fitness and self-defense."
Each hour-long class is different. With warm-up's, drills, and self-defense moves, it's both anaerobic and aerobic. It resembles kick-boxing, but Ernie says, "It's kickboxing where you're learning skills to save your life. It's not just punching and kicking in the air, or punching and kicking a bag. It's working with another person and pushing yourself." Four months into Krav Maga, Shaunna Wollpert says it's pushed her to new levels. "I've lost about 20 pounds since I started. That was big help, and also I'm learning how to defend myself which is a big factor in my everyday confidence when I walk down the street, when I get into my car. I mean everything. It really affects my everyday life."
Ernie says anyone can master Krav Maga. "It's based on natural instincts and reflexes. So it's not that hard. A lot of our techniques are very easy to learn (and) easy to pick up."
The nearest Krav Maga classes are taught at Brand X Martial Arts in Ramona. Lessons are given Thursdays from 7:30-8:30p and Saturdays from 9-10a.
